The story of rCUP began when a shocking statistic was made public back in 2016 - only 0.4% of disposable cups were actually being recycled.
The shock led to a public demand for a more sustainable way to enjoy coffee.
The team at rCUP rose to the challenge and started thinking about a way to use coffee cup waste. The problem with most paper coffee cups is that they have a plastic lining, this makes them difficult to recycle.
The clever scientists at rCUP decided that instead of trying to separate the two elements, why not recycle the whole cup. Old single-use cups are cleaned and shredded and the resulting fibers are formed into a plastic polymer. The polymer is blended with other recycled materials and then molded into the rCUP, the recycled reusable coffee cup.
The company behind the rCUP is ashortwalk – an award-winning design company on the north coast of Cornwall in the UK.
Former Dyson designer and inventor Dan Dicker heads up the team. ashortwalk came out of a desire to create meaningful products from recycled materials, a short walk from the sea.
ashortwalk also work with retail brands and recycling firms who want to turn their waste into useful new products. This is what they call ‘closed loop’ design and contributes towards the development of the circular economy.
